Andrey Volgin, PMO, Smart cities and traffic jam – how to handle with never ending issues?

Talking on-air at the Echo of Moscow radio station, Andrey Volgin, head of a project management office at Urbantech Group of Companies, discussed how transport digitization would support the functioning of the transportation system.

With the introduction of intelligent transportation systems, traffic control facilities no longer run according to one and the same program. This reduces idle time for the majority of transportation vehicles, thereby increasing the overall throughput, and is good for the environment.

This year, our company participated in the “Away with Traffic Jams” initiative in the Moscow region, and deployed intelligent transportation systems in several towns near Moscow: Shchelkovo, Fryazino, Krasnogorsk, and Sergiev Posad.

Our company analyzed traffic before and after the implementation of intelligent traffic lights control systems. What we saw was that as a result, the street road network throughput improved by 25%, specifically in Shchelkovo and Fryazino. The average time spent by motorists in traffic jams reduced by about 53%.

In the Moscow region, we have solved another interesting case related to traffic enforcement cameras. We track vehicles that transport municipal solid waste. As all this happens through integration with the region’s information systems, we understand where it should dump waste, that is at authorized landfills, and we will discover if its bed becomes empty all of a sudden. This would mean that it dumped the waste at an unauthorized site. We thus help the region to combat unauthorized waste dump sites.

To implement an intelligent transportation system in the region, a whole sequence of steps are to be followed. You need to conduct comprehensive modeling, planning, understand what kind of a street and road network development strategy the region pursues.

Our future is an all-encompassing traffic management system for an urban agglomeration. In that system, all traffic control participants will receive objective and verified information directly from road infrastructure elements. It's not as far away as it sounds.
