A Simple Way to Fight Traffic Jams Found

28% of motorists waste more than a week every year in traffic jams, with another 25% of them wasting less than a week in traffic jams annually. City traffic always gravitates to centers of attraction and this, as a rule, becomes the reason of traffic management difficulties. Traffic jams are driven by simultaneous people movements around the city, insufficient road capacity, excessive vehicle fleet, and various external factors.

As active digitization shows, technology and smart transport systems (STS) could help optimize transport flows, reduce accident rates, etc. STS are implemented in several stages. First, high-accuracy cameras, radars and lidars are installed in the streets, and then these devices are used to gather traffic situation data. Once information has been gathered and processed, specialists make optimization decisions: change traffic lights pattern here, add a speed limit there, etc.

Until recently, such STS were implemented mostly in the Central Russia. In Moscow, for example, such systems allow to shorten traffic congestions, optimize public transport routes, give drivers and passengers timely warnings of the traffic situation. Now, other cities are successfully adopting this metropolitan experience.

Makhachkala is an illustrative example. In 2021, a comprehensive STS implementation project took off, and already in 2022 a Data Processing Center (DPC) and a Traffic Management Center (TMC) were launched. These Centers have enabled real-time traffic control and traffic situation data gathering on a 24/7 basis. The “green wave” project was implemented on main arteries, the Peter the First and the Rasul Gamzatov Avenues and the Yaragskogo Street.

Results became visible mere months after the project launch: downtown street capacity was improved by 15%, refined traffic lights patterns allowed to reduce traffic jam dissipation time to 15 minutes, while jam time waste and the number of traffic jams in Makhachkala city center have declined by 14%.

Another example is the Moscow Region where STS implementation has progressed to the second level of “digital maturity”. MVS GROUP, part of Urbantech Group of Companies, has undertaken projects in Krasnogorsk, Sergiev Posad, Shchelkovo, and Fryazino. Now, motorists in these Moscow Region towns save about 20% of travel time, highway traffic jams have been reduced by two hours, and time waste in jams, by 63%. The overall street capacity has been increased by 25%.
