The Future of Digital Technology in Transport Industry

During the Transport Industry Week 2022, the Russian Smart Transport Systems analytical magazine and web-portal talked to Daniil Khazov, Chief Commercial Officer of the Urbantech Group of Companies. The interview covered the issue of smart transport system financing within the Safe High-Quality Roads national project, specific aspects of STS deployment in various regions, and the future of digital technology in the transport industry.

According to Daniil Khazov, government funds allocated for STS implementation are mostly spent on the procurement of necessary equipment. Unfortunately, these federal allocations do not cover infrastructure support costs. The company’s experience suggests that, as an STS is implemented, it is important to provide systemic support and maintenance. The expert also noted that, as a smart transport system is implemented, it is important to take the region’s unique road infrastructure into account.

The interview further covered the future of STS in regions. Daniil Khazov notes that it will take a few years to see the true effect of these projects, when smart transport systems are deployed in the majority of Russia’s regions and urban agglomerations. At the same time, to deploy STS in smaller residential areas, it is important to understand local specifics and objectives. Pedestrian safety is a major issue for areas of this sort. As a rule, speedways run across or in the direct vicinity of smaller residential areas so that it is important to assure pedestrian safety in these locations while making sure that the advantages of a speedway remain available to motorists. In terms of economic expediency, digitization of smaller populated areas and roads at large, even in uninhabited locations, is vital for the deployment of future digital infrastructure that will support driverless commercial and public transport traffic, including intercity bus service and trailer trucks.
