Aleksey Zanchurin, Urbantech Group: Artificial Intelligence to Manage Road Traffic

Transport systems typical for Russian cities feature a long central street with short branch roads, or a radial-ring road network. At the same time, every Russian town is unique and planners must find optimal solutions for each, to avoid transport collapse.

State-of-the-art technologies allow to implement smart traffic systems (STS) in cities with dense traffic, an innovative tool for managing traffic flows and an element of transport infrastructure digitization. At present, for example, an STS is being implemented in one of accident-prone regions, the Dagestan Republic. The first stage comprised traffic lights upgrades, installation of vehicle detectors and other STS elements that allowed to control road traffic and monitor road situation on a round-the-clock basis.

The STS enabled the “green wave” of traffic lights in the Peter the First and Rasul Gamzatov Avenues, improving their traffic capacity during the morning and the evening rush hours by 14 and 12 percent, respectively. Besides, the Traffic Management Center (TMC) works non-stop, allowing operators to control street traffic density online, promptly respond to traffic accidents and monitor public transport traffic.

However, to be accident-free, Russian roads require not only artificial intelligence systems but observance of traffic rules by everyone. It is important to know how traffic lights work, to use pedestrian crossings and safety isles.
