New Way to Cross the Oka River: Another Ropeway to Be Built in Nizhny Novgorod

The Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Urbantech Group of Companies have signed a concession agreement for the design, construction and operation of a new ropeway across the Oka river in Nizhny Novgorod. The ropeway launch is scheduled for 2025. It will ease the load on the city street network, reducing the number of traffic jams, redistributing traffic flows, while city residents will enjoy an alternative public transport route that will significantly shorten the travel time between the Lenin and the Gagarin Avenues.

The passenger ropeway will connect two major city arteries located on both banks of the Oka River, the Lenin and the Gagarin Avenues, linking the Zarechnaya metro station and the Switzerland Park. By choosing the ropeway, residents will be able to save about 30 minutes compared to detours by car or by ground public transport.

The ropeway will be 3,340 meters long with a travel time of 15 minutes. The ropeway will have 3 passenger stations: by the Zarechnaya metro station, at the end of the Zarechny Boulevard (close to the Oka) and near the Oceanis shopping mall. Inside the city boundaries, the ropeway will run along the Zarechny Boulevard, supported by 30-meter high pillars. This approach will reduce the risks for residents of nearby houses and make sure that no trees will be felled.
“The ropeway across the Oka is an important element of the urban agglomeration’s public transport; it will both be part of the public transport system, and a tourist attraction. With this link, the Zarechny Boulevard and the surrounding area will become yet another hot spot that we can and should develop and fill with activities. The ropeway will also improve the connection between the Zarechnaya and Nagornaya parts, making the Switzerland Park and the City Water Park more readily accessible by Nizhny Novgorod residents and visitors,” - said Sergey Morozov, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The ropeway capacity is estimated at 10,000 people per day, with annual passenger traffic reaching 3.6 million. The trip fare will be approved by the Regional Government. The project is financed entirely out of non-budgetary sources on a PPP basis, pursuant to a concession agreement between the region and the investor. The National Ropeways engineering company, a subsidiary of JSC Kavkaz.RF, will act as Urbantech’s technology partner.
“As the transport infrastructure development partner of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Urbantech Group will invest over 43 billion rubles in the new ropeway project. Our Group’s experience in the areas of transport planning, quality assurance and traffic safety, complemented by successful cases of major transport infrastructure project implementation, will allow to efficiently integrate the new ropeway into the city’s existing transport network, making travel more comfortable for passengers,” - comments Andrey Denisenkov, founder and shareholder of the Urbantech Group of Companies.
The Urbantech Group of Companies focuses on the design and implementation of transport infrastructure projects. The Group’s key projects include Russia’s largest traffic safety concession in the Moscow Region, the creation of a digital twin for Moscow City’s entire road infrastructure, as well as design and implementation of smart transport systems in Nizhny Novgorod and Makhachkala urban agglomerations.
